Head of Unit Administrative Capacity Building and Solidarity Instruments - DG Regio, European Commission
Stefan Appel is 59 years old and has three children. He is an economist by education and has been working more than 25 years in the European Commission in different functions and services.
Since 2018 he is the Head of Unit for Administrative Capacity Building in DG REGIO. The unit’s work focusses on developing and disseminating knowledge to support the responsible authorities in Member States in managing cohesion funding. This covers areas such as roadmaps for administrative capacity building, integrity pacts, strategic public procurement and citizen engagement. The tools provided to Member State authorities are diverse and range from pilot projects and studies to peer exchanges and trainings. Stefan is passionate about inspiring the staff in the authorities to be more effective and efficient in making tangible investments for the people.
